5 Things to Know Today

Zoning Hearing Board will consider Abe Atiyeh plans to build drug and alcohol treatment centers.

Good morning Bethlehem. Today is Wednesday, October 19, 2011. We are now 67 days from Christmas in the Christmas City.

  1. CareerLink of the Lehigh Valley, 1601 Union Boulevard hosts job fairs for Assante and, for the stoutest of heart and heartiest of souls, Amazon.com. The Assante job fair runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is looking for warehouse workers and experienced forklift operators and is paying between $8 and $10 an hour. Amazon has been seeking all kinds of employees for its Upper Macungie “fulfillment center” at CareerLink for more than a month. Amazon pays up to $13 an hour.
  2. The city Zoning Hearing Board meets at 6 p.m. at Town Hall to consider two proposals by controversial developer Abraham Atiyeh, who aims to turn the former on Dewberry Avenue into a 70-bed drug and alcohol rehabilitation center for adults and to build a 60-bed drug and alcohol rehabilitation on a wooded lot on the 3400 block of Linden Street.
  3. Go to tonight for a spirited discussion on school cafeteria food. The highlight of the evening will be the 7 p.m. showing of , a feature-length documentary on efforts to green the lunchrooms in Baltimore schools. The film chronicles how processed, pre-prepared foods were replaced with locally grown, freshly made meals. A discussion group featuring a local organic farmer, Broughal’s principal and an official for Sodexo will follow. The event is free.
  4. Every Wednesday evening during the month of October, and the South Bethlehem Historical Society presents an authentic ethnic dining experience featuring beef goulash, chicken paprikash, stuffed peppers, dobosh torte, strudel, kiffles and other Hungarian delicacies. The menu items are available from 5 to 11 p.m. and a portion of the restaurant’s proceeds will be given to the Historical Society.
  5. Perfect for the season of the witch, the Lehigh Valley Toastmasters Club will read some of horror master Edgar Allan Poe’s best-loved stories and poems in a free event at the Bethlehem Area Public Library starting at 7 p.m. Hear The Raven, Annabel Lee, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado read by some of the best public speakers in the Valley. "For the love of God, Montresor!"
