Presidential Election

The Man Who Wins Lehigh Valley Will Win Pa.

The Lehigh Valley is a great predictor of how Pennsylvania will vote in presidential elections.

Muhlenberg College professor and pollster Christopher Borick won’t predict who is going to win Tuesday's presidential election. And he won’t say who will take Pennsylvania. But he will say this: “I’m very confident that who ever wins the Valley will win Pennsylvania.” The Lehigh Valley, with its cities, suburbs and rural areas, has become a bellwether for Pennsylvania politics. In 2008, both Northampton and Lehigh counties went for Barack Obama, just like the state. The Lehigh Valley went for Democrats John Kerry in 2004 and Al Gore in 2000, as did Pennsylvania as whole. “Pennsylvania hasn’t been a very good predictor of elections,” said Borick, director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion. But “the Lehigh Valley as a …

Biden-Ryan Debate: How Will Pennsylvania Native Biden Do?

Vice President Joe Biden meets Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan in debate tonight. Patch asked voters 'How will Biden do?' when his wife came campaigning Monday in Wescosville.

The stakes are high tonight as Pennsylvania native Joe Biden meets Congressman Paul Ryan in their only debate. When Jill Biden made a campaign stop at the Pennsylvania State Education Association office in Wescosville Monday, Patch took the opportunity to ask Obama-Biden supporters how they think Joe Biden will do, given Obama's lackluster performance last week in the first presidential debate and Biden's propensity for gaffes. Here's what they had to say: * Muhlenberg College student Hannah Miller: “Both candidates have the potential to be offensive to somebody as well as to sway them. “Both are dynamic. It should be interesting.” * Linda Mancinelli of Allentown, whose daughter, Alissa Jebitsch, is a volunteer for the Obama campaign. …

Let's not forget Joe is the guy who said "it's about a 3 letter word, J-O-B-S. He said, "stand up and let 'em see ya" to a guy in a wheelchair. Reffering to his political adversaries, he told a mostly black audience, "they want to put ya'll back in chains". Sarah Palin was not near as looney. It was Fey who claimed she could see Russia from her house.   more ›

Jill Biden Energizes Obama Supporters

Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, makes a campaign stop in Wescosville Monday to drum up support for the Obama-Biden ticket in the final weeks of the campaign.

Laura J. Marie has been so frustrated with friends and family who do not support the Obama-Biden ticket that she went online a few days ago to offer to help the president's re-election campaign. "And I was invited here today," she said as she stood among the 100 or so supporters who came to hear Jill Biden speak Monday at the Pennsylvania State Education Association office in Wescosville. "I only wish I did it sooner." Marie, who said she voted for Obama in 2008, was clearly among like-minded individuals as she waited for Jill Biden to approach the podium. Some, like Allentown resident and retired Salisbury High School art teacher Dolly Yanolko, were quite emphatic in their support for the president. “Any teacher who doesn’t vote for a …

Pa. Will Leave Non-Citizens on Voter Rolls

Pennsylvania election officials do not plan to seek access to a federal database that would help them identify legal noncitizens, who have registered to vote

By Jared Sichel | PA Independent HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania will not be following Florida’s lead in identifying noncitizens on its voter registration rolls, even though the commonwealth’s law doesn’t do much to stop noncitizens from registering. “We haven’t come across that as an issue,” said Pennsylvania Department of State spokesman Ron Ruman. “It hasn’t crossed our radar, I guess, as something we needed to look at.” Ruman added that his agency has “no intention” of accessing the national database of resident noncitizens as Florida did. The Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database, maintained by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, includes people who legally reside in the United States with visas, for example, but are…

Is what "freeandequalPA" says about just needing the "last 4 SS digits" and nothing else to vote by absentee ballot true? If so, it seems like it has the potential for tremendous fraud. But that may be exactly what the current Presidential administration wants!   more ›

Pa. Voter ID Law Continues to Stir Controversy

Protesters, courts and the federal government are all getting their say on Pennsylvania's controversial new voter ID law.

By Eric Boehm | PA Independent HARRISBURG – The battle over voter ID in the Keystone State has reached its boiling point. Hundreds of residents protested the new voter ID law on Tuesday at the State Capitol in Harrisburg. (Photo by Melissa Daniels) Several hundred angry protesters gathered at the state capitol Tuesday, a day before the firstCommonwealth Court hearing on the legitimacy of the voter ID law and one day after it was revealed that the federal Department of Justice is also reviewing the Pennsylvania law. The controversial law is part of a national effort spearheaded by Republican governors and GOP-controlled state legislatures. Supporters say the effort will strike a blow against voter fraud by ensuring that only legitimate …

Many people will not realize this law has taken effect until it is too late. This is a very important election to many people & to implement it right now, we all know why, lets not pretend anymore. It's shameful to suppress the vote in America & to still in 2012 be screwing the powerless.   more ›
