Pollen, wind and climate make the Lehigh Valley an 'allergy capital,' according to a national report.
The Lehigh Valley ranks 45th—an improvement from its ranking of 41 last year— among "Spring Allergy Capitals" as named by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The report is an independent research project to identify the 100 most challenging places to live with allergies during the spring season. This year, Jackson, Miss., rose to the number one spot on the list (up from number four last year) primarily due to very high pollen and a large reliance on allergy medications among allergy patients. The rankings are based on scientific analysis of three factors for the 100 largest metro areas in the U.S. The data measured and compared for the ranking include:

A Hellertown pastry chef and business owner is $10,000 richer (and a lot more famous) thanks to his victory on the Food Network reality TV show "Sweet Genius" last night. Alan Pitotti, who appeared on the Jan. 17 "Samba Genius" episode of the competition show, defeated three other contestants to win the grand prize and garner some prized national publicity for the borough. Pitotti is the owner of Dolce Patisserie, a boutique pastry shop that specializes in high-end confections and desserts. Dolce Patisserie is located in the Shoppes at Hellertown on Main Street. A new report ranks the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area of Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton as a 'best performing' city based on economic factors
The Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton metropolitan area ranks among our country's "best-performing" cities in a new report. "The 2012 Milken Institute Best-Performing Cities Index ranks U.S. metropolitan areas by how well they are creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth. The components include job, wage and salary, and technology growth. In most years, these give a good indication of the underlying structural performance of regional economics." An economic consulting group has ranked Lehigh County number seven on a top 10 list of communities recommended for investment.
Lehigh County is ranked seventh in a top ten list of communities recommended for investment by a Pittsburgh economic consulting group, according to a WFMZ report. The Fourth Economy Community Index examines both statistical and qualitative factors at the county level in five areas: Investment, Talent, Sustainability, Place, and Diversity. The consultants say these five areas serve as a foundation for future economic success. According to the calendar, there are six more weeks of autumn, but somebody apparently forgot to tell Mother Nature. November has barely begun and the Lehigh Valley is already under a winter weather advisory. On Wednesday morning National Weather Service predicted snow will start after 1 p.m. with a daytime snow accumulation of two to four inches possible. It will be breezy with a north wind 14 to 22 mph with gusts as high as 37 mph. Parkland schools dismissed early Wednesday. Host families from around the Lehigh Valley attend a picnic with their Fresh Air kids who leave to go home to New York City today.
Fresh Air Fund children and their Lehigh Valley host familes converged on a farm in Upper Milford Wednesday for an end-of-the-visit picnic. The crowd included many of the 31 Fresh Air children who came from New York City 10 days ago and leave to return home today, according to Jenae Holtzhafer, fund representative for the Fresh Air Fund in the Lehigh Valley and a Patch columnist. The picnic was at the home of Holtzhafer's parents, Keith and Terri Wolfe, and featured hot dog eating contests, pony rides, acting games, face painting and other activities. Freedom Patriots lose to the Emmaus Green Hornets Friday night in a tight Lehigh Valley Conference Basketball Championship game.
Emmaus beat Freedom 47-44 in a close Lehigh Valley Conference Championship game Friday night Allen High School's Milo Sewards Gym. Emmaus hasn't won a league championship in five years. This win makes the Green Hornets (21-3) the No. 1 seed in the District 11 Class 4A playoffs. Freedom finished the season 20-4.
