With C.J. McCollum sitting behind the bench instead of leading the Mountain Hawks on the court, Lehigh opened up the Patriot League season Saturday with a dominating 79-47 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders at Stabler arena. Complete team efforts, like this one, will be needed if Lehigh is to successfully defend its league championship without McCollum, who broke his foot a week ago. Mackey McKnight led the way with 16 points while freshman Justin Goldsborough had a career-high 10 rebounds. The Mountain Hawks are 11-4 on the season and 1-0 in the Patriot League. The attached video, courtesy of Lehigh Athletics, features game highlights and interviews with Coach Brett Reed and senior Holden Greiner.

An X-ray of the left foot of Lehigh Mountain Hawks’ star guard C.J. McCollum taken Sunday confirmed the team’s fears: He has a broken bone – the fifth metatarsal – in his left foot. The All-American is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks of play as a result of the injury, according to a Lehigh news release. At best, that means McCollum could be back to play in Lehigh’s final regular season game, at Stabler Arena, against Army on March 2. At worst – unless Lehigh can pick up an NCAA Tournament berth without its best player, McCollum has played his last game as a Mountain Hawk. “We are going to make sure C.J. is fully recovered and will place the highest priority on quality of care,” said Lehigh head coach Brett Reed. “We’ll be certain the …

The game may not have been the biggest loss the Lehigh Mountain Hawks suffered in a 59-55 defeat at Virginia Commonwealth Saturday night. The team’s best player, All-American C.J. McCollum, may have broken a bone in his left foot, according to reports. It is unclear how severe the injury is or how much time Lehigh’s star senior guard will miss. “It appears as if there may be a break in his foot,” Lehigh coach Brett Reed told The Express-Times. “It is too early to make that diagnosis for sure. I’m certainly not an expert in that area. We’re going to take him back, do some tests and we’ll ultimately have some confirmation from there, but I think it is a little bit more significant than an ankle sprain.” McCollum missed the first game of …

Lehigh shot 63 percent from the field (38-of-60) and 58 percent from three-point range (11-of-19) in an offensive clinic. For Coach Brett Reed, this was his 100th victory as Mountain Hawks' coach. Lehigh University senior guard C.J. McCollum was named a pre-season First Team All-American by The Sporting News, recognition reserved for the elite among college basketball’s best players. Entering his senior season with 2,074 career points, McCollum joins Cody Zeller (Indiana), Doug McDermott (Creighton), James Michael McAdoo (North Carolina) and Deshaun Thomas (Ohio State) as First Team honorees. McCollum, who after considering entering the NBA draft decided to return to Lehigh for his senior year, is second in Lehigh and Patriot League history in career scoring. He needs only 151 points to break the league mark of 2,224 held by Holy Cross’ Rob Feaster, while he’s 630 from breaking the school record of 2,703 currently held by Daren …

Lehigh kicker Jake Peery booted a 22-yard field goal as time expired to give the Mountain Hawks a 34-31 victory over the Fordham Rams on Saturday in a nail-biter at Goodman Stadium. With its 14th consecutive regular season victory, Lehigh has the longest current winning streak in college football, according to The Brown and White. The victory was also the Mountain Hawks' 15th straight win against a Patriot League opponent. Lehigh, 5-0 this season, set up the game-winning drive by forcing Fordham to punt from its own 7-yard-line and getting a return to the Rams’ 39 with 1:39 left in the game, according to The Express Times. The Mountain Hawks offense was then able to drive the ball down to the Fordham 5 with three seconds left to set …

Mountain Hawk shooters go cold in second half as Xavier stops Lehigh short of Sweet 16.
The clock struck midnight on Lehigh’s Cinderella run on Sunday night as the Mountain Hawks lost to the Xavier Musketeers 70-58 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. But even with the loss, Lehigh fans on Twitter were still expressing pride in their team and its historic run, defeating the storied Duke Blue Devils on Friday, becoming on the sixth 15th-seeded team to win its opening game against a two seed. Mountain Hawks fans were expected to greet the team on its return to campus before 3 a.m. today at Taylor Gym. Lehigh got off to a hot shooting start and jumped out to a 33-18 lead in the first half. But Mountain Hawks’ leading scorer C.J. McCollum got into foul trouble with about 8 minutes left in the first half. With Lehigh’s …
