Dozens of properties to be sold at monthly Lehigh County sheriff's sale on Friday
Dozens of properties are on the list for Friday's monthly Lehigh County Sheriff's sale. The list includes an opening bid and a total of back taxes owed on each property. Sales are held starting at 10 a.m. in Room 131 on the first floor of the Lehigh County Courthouse, Fifth and Hamilton Streets, Allentown. The sale is a public auction and buyers must bid for properties, which are not available for inspection prior to the sale. More information is available on Lehigh County's website.

An economic consulting group has ranked Lehigh County number seven on a top 10 list of communities recommended for investment.
Lehigh County is ranked seventh in a top ten list of communities recommended for investment by a Pittsburgh economic consulting group, according to a WFMZ report. The Fourth Economy Community Index examines both statistical and qualitative factors at the county level in five areas: Investment, Talent, Sustainability, Place, and Diversity. The consultants say these five areas serve as a foundation for future economic success. According to the calendar, there are six more weeks of autumn, but somebody apparently forgot to tell Mother Nature. November has barely begun and the Lehigh Valley is already under a winter weather advisory. On Wednesday morning National Weather Service predicted snow will start after 1 p.m. with a daytime snow accumulation of two to four inches possible. Muhlenberg College professor and pollster Christopher Borick won’t predict who is going to win Tuesday's presidential election. And he won’t say who will take Pennsylvania. But he will say this: “I’m very confident that who ever wins the Valley will win Pennsylvania.” The Lehigh Valley, with its cities, suburbs and rural areas, has become a bellwether for Pennsylvania politics. Chelsie Grant, 19, of Lower Milford, was sentenced in Lehigh County Court to 1 to 2 years in prison for abuse of her 6-month-old son.
A Lehigh County judge sentenced a Lower Milford woman Friday to one to two years in prison and 18 years' probation for abusing her 6-month-old son earlier this year. Chelsie Grant, 19, who pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault, faced 10 to 20 years in prison under sentencing guidelines. Her guity plea and other mitigating circumstances, including her low intelligence, mental health and remorse, contributed to the short jail sentence, Judge James T. Anthony said. "It's a very serious crime you committed," Anthony said. "You are obviously not capable of raising a child." The voter registration offices of Northampton and Lehigh counties both saw last-minute surges, giving each a greater number of registered voters for the 2012 presidential election than they had in 2008. Democrats held a substantial edge in both counties, outnumbering Republicans by 31,000 in Northampton County and 36,000 in Lehigh County as of late last week. However, representatives of both voter registration offices said they had more names to input into their records from last-minute registrations. As of Friday morning (Oct. 12), Northampton County had 101,338 registered Democrats, 70,321 Republicans and 37,426 independents and members of other parties, according to Dee Rumsey, county director of elections. A surge in voter registration just before the Oct. 9 deadline means Lehigh County has topped the number of voters registered for the 2008 presidential election. The county voter registration, as of the morning of Oct. 11, was 76,135 Republicans, 112,411 Democrats and 36,741 Independents and members of other parties, according to Tim Benyo, Lehigh County chief clerk of Voter Registration and Elections. That’s a total of 225,287, with Democrats having a 36,276 edge over Republicans, but the county still had more registrations to put into the computerized voter records. Authorities say 'bath salts' and other synthetic drugs were sold in three states from an Allentown-based distributor.
The owner of an Allentown distribution business and the operators of five gas stations and convenience stores in Montgomery and Lehigh counties are among 15 people who have been arrested in connection with an organization that allegedly distributed "bath salts" and other synthetic drugs throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, authorities said Thursday. Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman said the arrests were the culmination of a year-long investigation involving the Lehigh County District Attorney's office and a number of municipal police forces in both counties. West Nile virus made national news recently with an announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We're in the midst of one of the largest West Nile virus outbreaks ever seen in the United States,” said Dr. Lyle Petersen, who is the director of the Division of Vector-borne Infectious Diseases at the CDC. We are hearing more about West Nile virus and the cases of the virus being found on our doorstep.
