Vote for Local Finalist in Holiday Lights Contest

Your vote can help Salisbury School District win $100,000

A Lehigh Valley home is one of 24 national finalists in the Patch "Deck the House" contest. Wayne and Alayne Renninger have been decorating their house for Christmas in a big way for more than 30 years. If one inflatable Santa is good, 10 are better. They're house broadcasts "Merry Christmas" in large white lights. Seeing their house on South Fairview Road in Salisbury Township all decked out in lights and hearing the appreciative comments from passersby was always its own reward. But that changed Friday when the Renningers found out their house was selected to be among two dozen finalists out of hundreds of entries in Patch's national Deck the House Contest. If they win (by getting the most votes by Jan. 8), Salisbury Township School …

Kmart Layaway Angel Trend Hits Bethlehem

Anonymous shoppers are paying off layaways for strangers at Kmart stores

A nationwide trend of anonymous shoppers paying off lawaways for strangers at Kmart stores has hit the Lehigh Valley including the Kmart on Linden Street in Bethlehem. "We just had three over the weekend," assistant manager Diane Charles told Patch on Monday. A couple paid $250 toward three different layaways. Two other donors gave about $100 to pay off purchases for strangers. Charles said she chose layaways that were delinquent and that included children's toys, figuring the layaway angels would have the biggest impact by covering those purchases. She then called the layaway customers to inform them of their good fortune. "They were ecstatic," she said. "One person wanted to know who paid it off and I told them it was just a random …

Take These Terrific Book Lists Gift Shopping

Southern Lehigh, Nazareth and Emmaus librarians recommend children's books about the holidays, winter and snow.

Those who despair that books are going the way of the 8-track tape should have been in Barnes & Noble in Saucon Valley last Friday. It was surely the liveliest spot for miles around - I’ve been in less crowded dance clubs. Granted, on Friday and Saturday nights it has become the place to see and be seen for every teenager in a 20-mile radius and they aren’t there to read Anna Karenina. But there were also plenty of grown-ups shopping with young kids who were obviously excited about no-tech storybooks. For those who need some help gift shopping, Southern Lehigh, Nazareth and Emmaus librarians recommend these books about the holidays, winter and snow for children ranging from toddlers to those in early elementary grades. 5 Tips for Pet Photos with Santa

Dec. 5 & 12 are the last days for holiday pet photos at Palmer Park Mall

::SQUEAK SQUEAK:: Say, “Woof!” ::CLICK CLICK CLICK:: Yep, it’s that time of year again, and you only have two more chances to take your gorgeous pet to see Santa at the Palmer Park Mall -- Dec. 5 and 12. I took my 80-pound Rottweiler, Allie, to get her picture taken with Santa on Nov. 28, and I could have been better prepared. So, before you start the primping, here are five tips to think about before heading to the mall with Fido in tow. 5. Go with a friend or family member. Unless you have a four-pound Chihuahua, I recommend bringing a fellow human along for the ride. I brought my best friend -- who Allie loves to pieces -- just in case I went for a drag through the mall and needed some assistance. Luckily, Allie couldn’t get much …

Take Our Poll: Is Santa Here Too Early?

Santa arrived at Lehigh Valley Mall on Veterans Day

Sure, you've come to expect Christmas merchandise filling store shelves before Halloween has faded into the pre-winter darkness. But this year, Santa Claus arrived at Lehigh Valley Mall on Veterans Day - Nov. 11. Similarly, you'll find Santa is also ready for his close-up at Palmer Park Mall near Easton and at South Mall near Allentown. The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley are following a more traditional calendar. Santa will arrive in Center Valley for a tree-lighting event on Nov. 26 - the Saturday after Thanksgiving. So what do you think? Take our poll and please add your comments below.
