Veterans Day: What's Open and What's Closed

Local government offices, schools and retail shops are open; federal, state, county offices and banks are closed in observance of holiday.

  In observance of Veterans Day, here is what's open and closed Monday, Nov. 12. Bethlehem City Hall and Bethlehem Township municipal offices are open.  Bethlehem Area School District schools are open. Bethlehem Area Public Library is open. Northampton County Courthouse is closed. Lehigh County Courthouse is closed.  Northampton and Lehigh county government offices are closed. District Judge offices are closed. State offices are closed. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation driver's license and photo centers are closed. (Online services are available. www.dmv.state.pa.us) Most Pennsylvania Liquor stores are open. Veterans Day 2012: Thank You for Your Service to Our Country

There are more than 21 million veterans in the United States and Patch says "thank you" on Veterans Day!

Here's a rundown of Veterans Day 2012 facts from the U.S. Census Bureau: Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Thank a veteran! Add your note of thanks in our comments section below. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars.
