Local servicemen and women who have lost their lives while serving and protecting our nation will be honored during the Memorial Day Celebration at SteelStacks from 3 to 8 p.m., Saturday through Monday. The weekend-long event, which will also pay tribute to veterans and active members of the U.S. Armed Forces, will feature a memorial service on Memorial Day, as well as patriotic and family-focused programming throughout the weekend. More than 280 images of local veterans and active military personnel will also be on display on the SteelStacks campus as part of the “Our Hometown Heroes” display. Joan Jett and The Blackhearts will be the featured attraction of the 26th annual Ride for Life Muscular Dystrophy Association benefit, Saturday and Sunday at SteelStacks. But you don’t need to be a motorcycle rider or participate in the event to see the show at the Levitt Pavilion. For the first time, MDA is offering a limited number of general admission tickets for $70 for the concert starring a woman who some call the “Queen of Rock n’ Roll.” Tickets are available at the ArtsQuest Center box office and online at tix.artsquest.org. Rain or shine, all ticket sales are final. Proceeds will benefit local families served by MDA. In its heyday, the Hoover-Mason Trestle carried tons of raw materials in rail cars from the Bethlehem Steel ore yard to massive blast furnaces where the steel that built the battleships that won World War II and the skyscrapers and bridges that changed the landscape of America was forged. On Wednesday, city officials and private stakeholders announced a $10 million project to breathe new life into the 2,000-foot-long historic trestle railway. The plan is to build a several-stories-high pedestrian promenade that will allow for further historic interpretation of the former Bethlehem Steel complex and passive recreation. A free hunt for Just Born Peeps chicks is one of the highlights of Easter weekend planned at SteelStacks. The Peeps hunt, which will be open to the public, will take place on the Levitt Pavilion lawn at 1:30 p.m. Sunday and will feature an appearance by none other than the Easter Bunny. On Easter, March 31, the Musikfest Café will present its first Easter brunch from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.. Among the many options from which to choose are entrées such as challah French toast, aromatic poached salmon, penne pasta with Italian sausage, herb roasted turkey, roast beef and apple smoked bacon.
