Assault Weapons Ban? Here’s Where Lehigh Valley Lawmakers Stand

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey has change of heart, backs ban, as does Representative-Elect Cartwright.

On the hot-button issue of banning semi-automatic assault weapons, one area congressman-elect has come out swinging and U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania has had a change of heart. Casey, who just won a second term, told the Philadelphia Inquirer recently that he was haunted by images from the massacre at Newtown where Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother before murdering 20 children and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. Previously, he had opposed an assault weapons ban, but since Newtown he had decided he would support one as well as a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines. “The power of the weapon, the number of bullets that hit each child, that was so, to me, just so chilling, it haunts me,” Casey said. Pa. Democrats Seek Corbett Challenger for 2014

Democrats want to avoid a primary battle in 2014 and are looking for the best candidate to opposed Gov. Tom Corbett when he runs for re-election

By Eric Boehm | PA Independent Pennsylvania Democrats at last week's national convention said there is not a clear-cut favorite to challenge sitting Gov. Tom Corbett in 2014. Still, with Corbett’s approval rating in the mid-30s on most polls, Democrats said they are confident they can break a 60-year trend in which one party and then the other has controlled the governor’s mansion for eight years at a time. Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro said the Democrats had a deep bench of candidates, who could make a case for replacing Corbett. “Whoever takes on Tom Corbett is certainly going to have their hands full, but will certainly have a lot of wind at their backs,” Shapiro said, though he declined to offer a personal favorite. Casey Calls for Sex Abuse Reporting Inquiry

Casey says feds should scrutinize reporting requirements following Penn State scandal

In the fallout of the alleged sexual abuse reports at Penn State University, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) announced an inquiry Tuesday into federal laws "designed to protect children from sexual abuse." Citing directly the charges against former Penn State coach Jerry  Sandusky and the reported inaction by university officials that led to the termination of legendary coach Joe Paterno and other administrators, Casey requested a hearing with the Senate HELP Subcommittee on Children and Families. “The tragic events reported from Penn State have been a shock to the  nation’s conscience.
