Here are some practical tips for packing school lunches that are healthy and kid friendly
Back to school means back to packing lunches. Yikes! I have such a hard time coming up with new ideas. Peanut butter and jelly gets boring. Nutella has been a great backup especially paired with some strawberries, but that gets old too. Regardless, both options will be in my pantry for busy mornings but I need some more interesting solutions. Do you have any good lunch box ideas? I asked around and some other moms shared their tips with me. Elise S., a Cinnaminson mom of two, told me how she brightens up peanut butter and jelly or tuna sandwiches with a little trick. “I sometimes cut them into different shapes with cookie cutters or use a little gadget that cuts the sandwich into a circle with no crusts.” Kids love the “no crust” …

New requirements mean more vegetables, fruit, whole grains and beans, and less fat and sodium in your child's school lunch.
School bells will ring out across Bethlehem this morning as the 2012-13 academic year gets under way. Kids may notice that some aspects of their school lunch have changed thanks to a new federal law aimed at reducing childhood obesity. The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act “requires schools to increase the availability of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat- free and low-fat milk in school meals; reduce the levels of sodium, saturated fat and trans fat in meals, and meet the nutrition needs of school children within their calorie requirements,” according to this informational flier produced for the Bethlehem Area School District by its school meal provider, Sodexo. Providing healthy fare when there's a need to feed hundreds of kids in a few hours, with a mass food production system in place, is no easy task, but Broughal Middle School is trying.
Changing eating habits for the better is key to turning the tide towards better lifelong health, especially when 1 out of 3 children in this country is overweight or obese, and improving the school lunch students eat every day could go a long way toward that goal. “It starts with a vision,” says Edward Docalovich, principal of Broughal Middle School at the screening of the documentary, Cafeteria Man, Wednesday evening. “There's still a lot more to be done.” “It's all about education, but also about availability. You go to the corner store, and it's all Tastycakes and McDonalds,” said Richard Chisholm, co-director of the film, which chronicles efforts in the Baltimore school district to replace the 83,000 meals served daily with fresh, well…

Feature-length "Cafeteria Man" chronicles the efforts to “green” the food in Baltimore schools.
An event Wednesday night at Broughal Middle School will spotlight one school district's efforts to "green" its school cafeteria diet and serve more healthy meals to students. Cafeteria Man will be shown through the efforts of the Kellyn Foundation and a variety of local arts and community initiatives. The feature-length documentary film highlights the efforts of Baltimore to improve the school food for 83,000 students. The film chronicles how processed, pre-prepared foods were replaced with locally grown, freshly made meals. Prior to the showing of the film at Broughal, there will be a reception highlighting local farmers at 6 p.m. The film, scheduled for 7 p.m., will be followed at 8:20 p.m. by a discussion panel featuring co-founders of…
