5 Festive Facts About New Year’s Day

Ring in 2013 with a few things you probably didn’t know about celebrating a new year.

Here are a few fun facts about celebrating a new year that might stay with you longer than your resolutions: 1. The first New Year’s Eve ball was made because of a ban on fireworks. In 1904, the owner of the New York Times threw a huge New Year’s Eve party with an enormous fireworks display. This became a tradition -- hence the Times Square party every year -- until 1907, when NYC banned fireworks. So that everyone would have something pretty to look at when midnight struck, a huge ball was made out of wood and iron and illuminated with 100 light bulbs. All PA Wine & Spirits Stores will be open until 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve. There are 15 state stores in Lehigh County and 13 in Northampton County listed on the LCB's website. Check the lists for addresses and phone numbers.

Celebrate New Year's Eve on Main Street in Bethlehem

Live music, cash bar, free champagne toast planned for inaugural open air New Year's Eve Celebration on Main Street.

  The Downtown Bethlehem Association will host the first ever Main Street New Year’s Eve celebration to ring in 2013. The open-air celebration in the Historic Downtown will feature live music with the Trouble City All-Stars and the Lehigh Valley Harmonizers, a cash bar, food vendors and a free champagne toast at midnight. In Bethlehem, we all know about the Peeps drop, but this event will culminate at midnight with a “Bethlehem Star rise.” “Our board of directors wanted to pull this together because there is nothing that happens anymore at midnight in Bethlehem,” said Samantha Schwartz, manager of the DBA.
