Flash Flood Watch Issued for Bethlehem

Prolonged and heavy downpours, along with possible thunderstorms, are expected to strike the Lehigh Valley this afternoon and evening. 'Road flooding likely,' National Weather Service says.

  The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Bethlehem and the rest of the Lehigh Valley, as “prolonged and heavy downpours” as well as thunderstorms are in the forecast for this afternoon and evening. The watch starts this afternoon and lasts until Thursday morning. The weather service says: “A slow-moving and potent cold front will tap the Gulf of Mexico and it is forecast to generate rainfall amounts of between 1 and 2½ inches. Locally higher amounts are possible in prolonged and heavy downpours. Moreover, thunderstorms may develop. Prolonged and heavy downpours would cause flash flooding in some locations. Lehigh Valley Under Tornado Watch

The Lehigh Valley is under a tornado watch until 2 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

  The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Northampton and Lehigh counties until 2 a.m. Saturday. A flash flood watch is also in effect until 8 a.m. Saturday. There is a potential for strong to severe thunderstorms as a cold front enters the region, the NWS says in a special weather statement. Any stronger thunderstorm could be capable of producing locally damaging winds and hail. In addition, heavy rain could cause localized, but brief, flooding. Rainfall amounts could total one to one and a half inches. Greater amounts -- up to two and a half inches -- is possible with the stronger storms. At this time, the greater chance for a severe thunderstorm appears to be across Delaware and Maryland -- and possibly southeastern …

Warnings, Watches Issued for Storms, Flash Floods

National Weather Service issues a thunderstorm watch through 10 p.m. tonight and a flash flood warning until 4 a.m. Wednesday morning.

  A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Northampton County until 7:45 pm and a severe thunderstorm watch will remain in effect until 10 pm tonight. The National Weather Service has also issued a flash flood watch until 4 am Wednesday for the city of Bethlehem and the rest of the Lehigh Valley. Flash flooding will result if there is between one and two inches of rain falls on urban areas, the weather service watch says. At 6:12 pm, the weather service was tracking a storm near Reading that was dropping quarter-size hail, 60 mph-winds and heavy rain.
