A Bethlehem Township man the FBI called “The Silent Bandit” for the manner in which he robbed six banks in Pennsylvania and New Jersey was sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison on Wednesday, according to published reports. Fawzi Atra, 43, of 2011 14th St., was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release following the prison sentence and pay a special assessment and $9,688 in restitution, according to The Morning Call. Atra had previously pleaded guilty to the crimes. When he was arrested after his sixth heist in Mount Pocono, Atra told police that he was motivated to rob banks because the economy was terrible and he had lost his job. A Bethlehem Township man arrested for a bank robbery in Mount Pocono Thursday is now the prime suspect in six other bank robberies including the one at the KNBT in West Bethlehem on April 3, according to court papers. “I’m the silent bandit,” Fawzi K. Atra told a detective from the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department shortly after being taken into custody on suspicion of robbing the ESSA Bank inside a Weis Market, according to a federal court affidavit filed by an FBI agent. The man who robbed the KNBT bank branch inside of the Giant in West Bethlehem more than a week ago may have struck again in Warminster, Bucks County, on Wednesday, according to the FBI. At approximately 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, the robber entered the PNC Bank inside of a Shop Rite in Warminster brandishing a weapon and presenting a threatening demand note to the teller After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, he fled the bank in what authorities believe to be a light silver or gold sedan with a rounded back That is similar to the description of the getaway vehicle in Bethlehem, which was a silver or beige sedan.
