Election 2013: Bethlehem Mayor

Donchez, Reynolds are Only Candidates for Mayor

No Republicans file nominating petitions for mayor; hot dog vendor runs for City Council; Councilwoman Jean Belinski will not seek re-election after 16 years.

Democratic City Councilmen Bob Donchez and J. William Reynolds are the only official candidates for Bethlehem mayor, according to an unofficial list of candidates released by the Northampton County Election Office. The deadline for filing nominating petitions was Tuesday. Barring any write-in campaigns, the whole issue of who will replace John Callahan as the city’s 12th mayor could be decided on May 21, Primary Election Day. With the mayor’s office, city controller’s office and four City Council chairs up for grabs, only one registered Republican – Chris Morales – filed nominating papers. It has been at least a decade since a Republican was on City Council and 15 years since the last Republican mayor, Ken Smith, left office. Republican …

Bethlehem Attorney Runs for Judge, But Is Seat Open?

Tom Carroll announces his candidacy for the Northampton County judgeship currently held by Leonard Zito, who has sued Pennsylvania to stop mandatory retirement at age 70.

An attorney from Bethlehem has announced that he will run for Northampton County judge, citing 25 years of legal experience. However, Tom Carroll is running for a seat currently being held by a man who does not want to let it go – and has sued the state to keep it. Judge Leonard Zito turned 70 on Jan. 26, which means that under Pennsylvania law he is required to retire by the end of this year. But Zito and five other Pennsylvania judges have sued in Commonwealth Court, claiming that the mandatory retirement age violates the equal protection and due process clauses of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and Article I of the state Constitution. It is unclear how the lawsuit might affect the election that would otherwise replace …

This guy knocked on my door in Fall 2011. When I told him I did not agree with his ideas, him and his friend, who I think was also running for Council, became very rude. They told me I deserved the other guys, and that the city was going to hell. Clearly this is not the temperament I want in a Judge. I will not be voting for him.   more ›

Councilman DiGiacinto Running for City Controller

Bethlehem City Councilman Dave DiGiacinto said his private and public sector business experience make him 'uniquely qualified' to become controller.

Bethlehem City Councilman Dave DiGiacinto announced his candidacy today for city controller. In a news release, DiGiacinto said he is running for controller because he believes that his combined private sector business and his local government financial experience make him uniquely qualified to oversee the city of Bethlehem's $72 million budget. DiGiacinto said that his priority as controller would be to ensure that Bethlehem has an independent review of the financial activities of the city.   A Democrat, DiGiacinto is in the last year of his one elected term to City Council. He ran for controller in 2007 and lost a hard-fought special election campaign to Republican Meg Holland. DiGiacinto was one of six men who applied to be appointed …

Donchez Touts Experience in Campaign Kickoff

Mayoral hopeful Bob Donchez says Bethlehem needs "strong, experienced and mature" leadership.

City Councilman Bob Donchez officially launched his campaign for mayor this morning, touting his 17 years of experience in city government in front of about 150 supporters at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem. “Bethlehem … like most cities faces challenges. Strong, experienced and mature leadership will be needed,” Donchez said. “I believe my past leadership and my vision for the future can and will continue to move Bethlehem forward.” Donchez said he intends to outline his vision for the city over the course of the campaign, but outlined his four top priorities: “a fiscally responsible and transparent city government, strong public safety, smart economic development and thriving and safe neighborhoods.” If elected, Donchez said he will …

And why should we elect kids as mayors who propose all of those budgets, mismanage the budgets they're given, lie to Council and the public, break the law, and are willing to throw the residents of Bethlehem under the bus the moment they want another elected office?   more ›

Scott Ott Will Run Again for County Executive

After a narrow miss in 2009, Scott Ott runs again for Lehigh County's top job.

Scott Ott, 51, a fiscally conservative Republican, told supporters and friends on Jan 24 that he will again run Lehigh County Commissioner in the fall. Ott is making his second attempt for the county's top job which narrowly eluded him in 2009 when, as an unknown, he came within 900 votes of beating seasoned Democratic politico Don Cunningham. He is currently a Lehigh County Commissioner, a position to which he was elected in 2011. “I am running for Lehigh County executive because I want to make our local government more accountable to the taxpayers who fund it and more effective for the people it serves.” Ott said in a written announcement. “I have spent my time on the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners fighting for reforms that reduced…

This guy has been the mayor's lapdog ever since he got on council. He vigorously defends the administration on everything. He has even verbally scorned citizens that spoke out requesting changes to tighten the zoning ordinance to protect residential neighborhoods. He also suggested billing for engineering expenses and city time to those that spoke out against the proposed parking plan in front of…   more ›
