Bethlehem's 'Week of Romance' features specials on dining, shopping and romantic activities like carriage rides

More than 35 downtown Bethlehem businesses are offering Valentine's Day specials as part of the Bethlehem Downtown Association's "Week of Romance." In addition to the deals listed below, there are also specials just for February 14. Bethlehem Winter Restaurant Week Starts Sunday

32 Bethlehem area restaurants offering special prix fixe menus for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Eat for a chance to win a $2,000 gift certificate to try them all.

  Bethlehem Winter Restaurant Week, which the Downtown Bethlehem Association likes to call one of “the most delicious weeks of the year,” kicks off Sunday and runs through Feb. 2. There are 32 participating restaurants offering prix fixe menus featuring breakfast for $5 or $10, lunch for between $5 and $15, and dinner for between $10 and $35. Most of the participating restaurants are in the North Side Historic Downtown or in the SouthSide Downtown, though a few – like Jumbars or Cactus Blue – are a little off the beaten path. Three of the participating restaurants are not even in the city: Blue Grillhouse is in Bethlehem Township, Prime Steakhouse is in Hanover Township and Yianni’s Taverna is in Lower Saucon Township. Celebrate New Year's Eve on Main Street in Bethlehem

Live music, cash bar, free champagne toast planned for inaugural open air New Year's Eve Celebration on Main Street.

  The Downtown Bethlehem Association will host the first ever Main Street New Year’s Eve celebration to ring in 2013. The open-air celebration in the Historic Downtown will feature live music with the Trouble City All-Stars and the Lehigh Valley Harmonizers, a cash bar, food vendors and a free champagne toast at midnight. In Bethlehem, we all know about the Peeps drop, but this event will culminate at midnight with a “Bethlehem Star rise.” “Our board of directors wanted to pull this together because there is nothing that happens anymore at midnight in Bethlehem,” said Samantha Schwartz, manager of the DBA. Merchants Bring Christmas Cheer to Underprivileged

South Bethlehem businesses and Downtown Bethlehem Association team up to provide Christmas gifts to 15 area families.

  For the first time, the Downtown Bethlehem Association and SouthSide merchants collaborated during December’s First Friday to bring a little holiday cheer into the homes of 15 children. On Thursday, more than four bags of unwrapped toys from Cutter’s Bike Shop, Godfrey Daniels, Youniversity of Music and Arts and Tallarico’s Chocolates were delivered to Fountain Hill Elementary School.  Many of the participating drop-off locations offered deals and percentages off if any patron brought in a new toy for the kids.  One downtown shop decided to help take care of the needs of the children, instead. Bethlehem Live Advent Calendar Opens Tonight

Live Advent Calendar in Historic Downtown Bethlehem enters its seventh season at the Goundie House. Lehigh University to be season's first presenters.

  A one-of-a-kind holiday tradition begins its seventh season in Historic Downtown Bethlehem this evening as the “Live Advent Calendar” will open at the 1810 Goundie House at 505 Main St. at 5:30 p.m. The merchants of the Downtown Bethlehem Association in conjunction with Historic Bethlehem Partnership will provide a special treat to the visitors every day. It is the only Live Advent Calendar in the United States. Crowds of up to 300 gather for the 10-minute program. The program will run through December 24. A mobile app from ParkNow will allow holiday shoppers to park for free in Bethlehem from November 24 through December 22.

  The Bethlehem Parking Authority and ParkNow are offering free Saturday parking from November 24 through December 22 if you use this mobile app. What’s mobile parking? Call: Call the local pay by cell phone number with your cell phone which is listed on the meter sticker or nearby sign. App: Get the ParkNOW app on your smartphone. Text: Use a text message to stop/start your parking sessions. Just text the command Park followed by the location (city) and space number to 32075. Mutt Strut Halloween Parade Returns for 5th Year

Doggie Day in Bethlehem Sunday will mean a howling good time on Main Street for costumed pets and their owners.

  Bethlehem’s Main Street will go to the dogs on Sunday. Specifically, dogs wearing Halloween costumes. It is once again time for Doggie Day in the Historic Downtown. The fifth-annual event will be presented by the Downtown Bethlehem Association from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will once again feature the “Mutt Strut” Doggie Halloween Parade. Parade registration begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Sun Inn Courtyard, behind the Historic Sun Inn. The parade will begin at 12:30 p.m. The suggested registration fee is $10 and proceeds will be shared with the Center for Animal Health and Welfare. Expect a detour and possible delays as contractors work on water lines in downtown Bethlehem on Monday, Sept. 17. All Main Street traffic will be diverted onto Market Street until early afternoon, according to the Downtown Bethlehem Association.

Main Street Reconstruction Resumes Today

Construction crews start to dig up surface of Main Street today; traffic will be reduced to one lane.

  If you are planning to drive to Historic Downtown Bethlehem in the next few weeks, prepare yourself for delays and consider some alternative routes around Main Street. The $3.2 million facelift for Main Street resumes this morning, city officials said. Construction crews will begin demolishing the pavement and roadway to prepare for replacement and the ultimate installation of a 50-by-30-foot inlaid granite star at the intersection with Market Street. Traffic on Main Street will be cut to one lane between Broad to Church streets. Traffic will be allowed to move in both directions as flagmen control the flow. Traffic should flow normally in both directions of Main Street since the red light at Market Street is eliminated during the construction. Other than the noise, there should not be a lot of construction delays with respect to traffic flow on Main Street.   more ›
