A Hellertown woman was charged with shoplifting in Bethlehem Tuesday after a security camera allegedly caught her putting candy and a pair of stockings in her purse. Julie Rhea, 63, of 35 E. Saucon St. was charged with felony retail theft following her arrest at the CVS at 305 W. Fourth Street in Bethlehem Tuesday afternoon. City police say store employees saw Rhea stick a bag of Hershey's miniatures and a pair of stockings into her purse. Court records say Rhea claimed she had brought the items into the store with her. Rhea -- who police note has four previous arrests for retail theft -- was arraigned before on-duty District Judge Gay Elwell in Easton; she was free on $2,500 bail.

A Bethlehem Township man was jailed Saturday after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend when she refused to have sex with him. Township police say Nigel Bisbing, 26, of 3406 Easton Ave., got into an argument with his girlfriend early Saturday morning. Police say Bisbing gave the woman an ultimatum: either she have sex with him or leave. When she chose to leave, he attacked her, throwing her onto his bed and covering her mouth and nose so she couldn't breathe. According to police, the woman eventually got away and ran -- without shoes -- directly to the police station. A Fountain Hill man threatened his mother and grandmother with a "Rambo knife" Saturday in Bethlehem, city police said. Jose Angel Rivera, 19, of 1315 Broadway, second floor, is charged the reckless endangerment, harassment, and terroristic threats. According to police, Rivera's mother told officers her son threatened her and his grandmother with a knife. He allegedly pushed his grandmother, and threatened to push her down the stairs. Police say Rivera's mother described the knife her son used as a "Rambo knife." Rivera was arraigned before on duty District Judge Gay Elwell in Easton, and sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.

The Bethlehem Police Department reported the following incidents on Friday, Dec. 23: For love of God and music? A 67-year-old resident of the 300 block of East Locust Street reported late Thursday morning that unauthorized charges were made to his bank account in the amount of $683, police said. The money was used to make purchases from iTunes and Christianity Online, the report added. No possible suspects were named in the fraud.
