Broughal School Nominated for National Award

SouthSide Middle School nominated by state for Department of Education Green Ribbon Award for increasing environmental and sustainability literacy.

  Broughal Middle School has been nominated for a national environmental award by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools Program recognizes schools that have made significant achievement toward increased environmental and sustainability literacy, reducing the school’s environmental footprint, and creating a healthy community for students and staff. 7 Bethlehem Area Schools on List of State's Worst

Broughal Middle School and 6 elementary schools in Department of Education's bottom 15 percent. School director challenges validity of results.

  Seven Bethlehem Area schools, including six elementary schools and Broughal Middle School, were included last week on a Pennsylvania Department of Education list of low-achieving schools. In all, 414 schools were included – all of them scoring among the bottom 15 percent of public schools in math and reading standardized tests. The Bethlehem Area elementary schools making the list are: Under Pennsylvania Act 85, students who live within the affected schools’ attendance areas — and whose families meet income guidelines — can apply for scholarships of up to $8,500, or up to $15,000 for special education students, to go to school elsewhere. Musical Instrument Donation Program Announced

A new community initiative was unveiled last week that will help ensure that students who want to play a musical instrument will have access to them at their public school.

The Youniversity of Music and Arts of South Bethlehem, in partnership with the national nonprofit Music4More, announced June 6 it is seeking public donations of musical instruments or monetary donations to place instruments in the hands of students who want to learn to play them. The new initiative will be called “SOStenuto,” which is an Italian musical term, sostenuto, derived from the Latin verb “sustinere,” meaning to uphold or sustain. “With our new SOStenuto program, the Youniversity of Music and Arts would like to make a meaningful contribution to supporting music education in Lehigh Valley's public school system,” said Dr. Antonius Bittmann, co-founder of the school. “There are many school children in our community who cannot afford …

Special Needs Student Assaulted on School Bus

Two students charged with simple assault for attack that went on for 15 minutes.

  Bethlehem police are investigating an assault of a special needs student by two other students that went on for 15 minutes on a school bus en route to Broughal Middle School in South Bethlehem Tuesday. The entire incident was captured on the bus’s security system, police said. According to WFMZ.com, the victim suffered only minor injuries. The bus driver stopped the bus several times to try to put a halt to the incident, according to The Express-Times. The two suspected assailants, both minors, who were not identified, have been charged with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct, according to the newspaper, quoting Bethlehem police. The suspects are also facing disciplinary action by the school district.

Former Broughal Employee Admits to Internet Threats

Report: James W. Kelley sentenced to time served and five years of court supervision.

A former Broughal Middle School employee who was arrested in January after he made threats on Facebook against the school and Lehigh Valley International Airport pleaded guilty today to a misdemeanor terroristic threats charge, according to a Morning Call report. James W. Kelley, 38, was sentenced to time served in prison -- about 60 days -- plus five years of probation in which he will be required to continue treatment for mental health issues. He was recently diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, according to his attorney, James Burke. The threats and his subsequent arrest led to grave concerns about the South Side middle school, where more than 100 parents turned out for a January special meeting to discuss what had happened.
