Lehigh County Executive William H. Hansell, who was appointed last summer to fill the unexpired term of former Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham, has resigned his post for health reasons, according to a release from the county. Hansell was recently hospitalized with pneumonia and subsequently diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He has started undergoing treatment and felt he needed to devote his energy to restoring his health, the release said. “I have been proud to serve as Lehigh County Executive for the past year," Hansell said in the prepared release. Lehigh County Executive Bill Hansell's budget compromise stands when a veto override falls short.
The average homeowner in Lehigh County will pay $44 less in taxes in 2013 than they do this year, under a county budget that includes both a tax cut next year and a tax credit. Under the budget, county spending will be cut by $3.5 million next year, taxes reduced by $3 million and tax credits given that amount to $3.5 million, said Tom Muller, the county's director of administration. The spending and tax cuts are the result of a lengthy budget process that resulted in Lehigh County Executive Bill Hansell offering a compromise budget that withstood a possible veto override Wednesday night by Lehigh County Commissioners. New Lehigh County Executive's first official act was to present the 2013 budget that includes a tax credit of about $44 for homeowners.
Bill Hansell was sworn in as Lehigh County Executive on Tuesday and immediately set to work as he delivered the 2013 budget to county commissioners. The Lower Macungie resident said the $365 million budget will provide a onetime expiring tax credit of about $44 to county homeowners. Real estate taxes will remain at 11.9 mils, based on valuations prior to Lehigh County’s reassessment, which is expected to be complete at the end of November. Former Lehigh County Commissioner Bill Hansell has been named acting Lehigh County Executive. Hansell, 75, of Lower Macungie, was appointed on a 8-0 vote Wednesday by Lehigh County Commissioners to fill Don Cunningham's unexpired term, according to lehighvalleylive.com.
