Liquor Bill Could Reform Beer Sales in Pa.

Privatization debates in the Pennsylvania General Assembly could mean changes to where Pennsylvanians can buy six-packs.

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — A simple six-pack of beer is becoming a focal point of the most substantive legislative debate on Pennsylvania alcohol laws since Prohibition. A Tuesday afternoon Senate Law and Justice Committee on liquor privatization, headed by Chairman Chuck McIlhinney, R-Bucks, featured numerous testifiers discussing the already-private industry of beer sales. Chief among the concerns from the beer distributor industry and taverns is package reform, or allowing establishments who sell beer to sell different amounts. Under current law, beer distributors cannot sell less than a case, and bars or grocery stores with the ability to sell bottles cannot sell more than a 12-pack. The Senate, under McIlhinney’s…

Democrats Pushing Corbett on Medicaid Expansion

Medicaid expansion continues to hang over Gov. Tom Corbett and budget-making lawmakers.

By Eric Boehm | PA Independent HARRISBURG – Democratic leaders in the General Assembly say Gov. Tom Corbett has delayed long enough on a decision about expanding Medicaid in Pennsylvania. And if the governor won’t make a decision, they are ready to force his hand. “If Gov. Corbett is unwilling to do the right thing, my colleagues in the Senate must send a clear message that this is unacceptable. It’s time for a vote on Medicaid expansion,” said state Sen. Vincent Hughes, D-Philadelphia, on Tuesday. Hughes has filed a resolution to force the state Senate to vote on Medicaid expansion. If a majority of senators support the resolution, a proposal to force the state to accept the expansion would be busted out of committee and brought …

McNabb is Greatest Quarterback in Philadelphia Eagles History

Former Quarterback Donovan McNabb announced this week that he is going to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle.

With the Philadelphia Eagles in mini-camp this week, a lot has been discussed about the team's quarterbacks. Who will emerge as the starter among Michael Vick, Nick Foles and rookie Matt Barkley. But then another quarterback's name entered the picture. And while he's not fighting for a roster spot, he's gunning for a legacy in Philadelphia Eagles history. Donovan McNabb announced this week his intentions to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle. And the team is planning a ceremony that will enable McNabb to be honored with Coach Andy Reid and his new team the Kansas City Chiefs in town. Ah, No. 5 and Big Red. Those were the days... And don't you miss those days? Maybe we took it for granted that McNabb put the Birds in playoff position every year…

'Most Wanted' Fugitive Pleads Guilty to Murder

Francisco Miranda eluded law enforcement for 18 years in the 1994 South Bethlehem killing of Jorge Velazquez. Now, he will spend the next 10-20 years in prison.

A man who spent 18 years on Pennsylvania’s Most Wanted list pleaded guilty on Friday to a 1994 murder in a South Bethlehem parking lot. Francisco G. Miranda, 50, was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in state prison after pleading guilty to third-degree murder, according to published reports. Under the terms of a plea bargain, Miranda will serve the maximum sentence that would have been allowed at the time of the murder, according to The Morning Call. Miranda eluded authorities for 18 years while he lived in the Dominican Republic but he didn’t flee the country on his own, the newspaper reported. New Jersey officials unwittingly deported Miranda—just weeks after the Bethlehem homicide—after he was arrested on drug charges under an assumed name…

Emergency Evacuation Drill for Animals Saturday

The Lehigh Valley County Animal Response Team will conduct a 24-hour emergency evacuation drill with the Lehigh County Humane Society to better prepare for animal emergencies.

The Lehigh Valley County Animal Response Team will conduct a 24-hour emergency evacuation drill with the Lehigh County Humane Society Saturday and Sunday to better prepare for animal emergencies, according to a release from LV CART. The drill will begin at noon Saturday and end at noon on Sunday. About 50 animals will be involved in the drill. LVCART is trained to respond to the needs of animals during large-scale emergencies and disasters. Election 2013: Bethlehem Mayor

Mayor's Race: Reynolds Gets Big Endorsements

Councilman J. William Reynolds endorsed by Mayor John Callahan and state Rep. Steve Samuelson. Councilman Bob Donchez calls mayor 'the ultimate hypocrite.'

UPDATED: 9:05 p.m. Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan endorsed City Councilman J. William Reynolds to be the next mayor of the city at a campaign rally before about 100 supporters in Payrow Plaza next to City Hall on Friday afternoon. “This city has always turned to a culture of invigorating leadership as opposed to a more cautious, status quo, stand pat, ‘let’s test the winds’ kind of approach,” Callahan said. “That was true when Don Cunningham was elected at the age of 31, 15 years ago. It was true when I was elected at the age of 34, ten years ago. “On those occasions, every time, the insiders tried to falsely scare the voters by portraying youth as somehow irresponsible or inherently reckless.” The mayor criticized Reynolds’ opponent, Bob…

“I was tempted then to speak out against that kind of desperate tactic,” said Callahan. And what about triple ice cream cones for Jim Delgrosso, the Reibman's real record mailer, and others from Callahan? Bob is right, John Callahan is the ultimate hypocrite. It's okay for him to campaign negatively, but how dare anybody else? If they do they are desparate?   more ›
