Books, Bulldogs and Brass: Your Weekend

Visit the Moravian Book Shop for a signing, find the best bulldogs at a dog show and hear The Philadelphia Brass play Bach and the Duke.

Historic Bethlehem Museums and Sites this weekend brings back its popular “Church & Chapel Walking Tour,” a guided peek at the interior of the first three places of worship in Bethlehem.

The tour begins in the oldest building in town, Bethlehem's 1741 Gemeinhaus, where the Moravians who founded Bethlehem first worshipped more than 270 years ago.

Discover the traditions behind the Moravian worship service, including the long-standing emphasis on music in Bethlehem. Tours are offered Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. beginning Saturday and ending Feb. 23.

Tickets are available online at HistoricBethlehem.org or at the Visitor Center at 505 Main Street, at the Moravian Museum, or by calling 1-800-360-TOUR. Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for children ages 6-12, and free for children ages 5 and under.

Here’s what else is going on in Bethlehem this weekend:

  • The Lenape Bulldog Club hosts a dog show at the Best Western Lehigh Valley Hotel, 300 Gateway Drive, Hanover Township at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Come watch bulldogs competing for Best of Breed title. Learn about the breed and talk to breeders.
  • The Moravian Book Shop hosts a book signing with author Mike Konz from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Konz served as a sergeant with the 1st Cavalry and 82nd Airborne Division in Vietnam. The Odyssey Years: A Novel View of the Vietnam Experience, is an unconventional look at the Vietnam War which will challenge mainstream orthodoxy as to the nature of the war and why it was fought.
  • Local party rock band, The Aardvarks come to the Musikfest Café for a Saturday night show at 8 p.m. Tickets in advance are $5 and $7 and $8 and $10 at the door.
  • Lehigh Valley-based ax-slinger Todd Wolfe brings his power blues trio to Godfrey Daniels at 8 p.m. Saturday. Most famous for his brief time in Sheryl Crow’s band, Wolfe also brings along guest vocalists Maria Woodford and Mary Hawkins. Admission is $18.50.
  • The Lehigh Valley Storytellers Guild hosts an afternoon of children’s tales at Godfrey Daniels at 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $4.50 or free for little ones less than 5 years old.
  • Zoellner Arts Center hosts an afternoon with The Philadelphia Brass, a five-piece ensemble that will be joined by Lehigh faculty, student musicians and guest artists conducted by Lehigh’s Paul Salerni, at 3 p.m. Sunday. The program will include music by Bach, Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington and many others. Tickets are $10 for the general public, and free for Lehigh University Students.
  • A new cabaret series, featuring singers and musicians performing popular and Broadway show tunes will debut at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks at 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $8.
