Musikfest Highlights: August 9

Jane's Addiction plays the Sands Steel Stage; hear some authentic Polish polka at Festplatz, and it's Beach Day at Plaza Tropical.

 

The Weather: Partly sunny, with scattered thunderstorms and a high of 89 degrees. The National Weather Service says there is a 40 percent chance of rain, increasing to 50 percent in the evening.

The Headliner: Jane’s Addiction, on-again, off-again, hard/alternative rock band from Los Angeles – featuring singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro – that formed in 1985.  The band stops at the Sands Steel Stage at PNC Plaza for its “Theatre of the Escapists” tour. Band of Skulls is the opening act. Tickets at $49 and $34 are still available. Gates open at 6 p.m. Show starts at 8.

The Highlight: Beach Day at Plaza Tropical will feature some sounds we typically associate with summer. The Great White Caps play surf rock at 1:30 p.m. The Defending Champions bring on the reggae at 3:30. Jimmy Buffet tribute band Jimmy and the Parrots take the stage at 6. The night ends with Yellow Dubmarine, a reggae Beatles tribute band, which plays out the rest of the night, starting at 8:30.

For the Little Ones: Pirates are the theme at the Peeps & Company Banana Island Craft Tent. The ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter, will have a bean bag toss game and a raffle for Philadelphia Phillies items. The ALS Association provides support for patients, families and caregivers afflicted with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The Classical Musikfest: Classical piano with Choo Choo Hu, an award-winning musician currently studying for a graduate degree with the great Leon Fleisher, at the Vesper Concert Series, 5 p.m. in . The Dolce Ensemble, a string quartet from New York that has been known to work rock, jazz and R&B tunes into its repertoire, is the Chamber Series concert at 7:30 p.m. in the .

The Best of the Free Platzes: Every year, ArtsQuest brings in at least one polka band from one of the European countries from whence the music originated. This year, that band is Westallgaier from Poland and it plays at Festplatz from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Hot Bijouxx is a band from the burgeoning Brooklyn, N.Y., music scene that mashes hot jazz, French swing and modern pop music. The band plays two shows at the KNBT Jazz Cabaret Stage in the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas at at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30. Blues and R&B singer Bev Conklin – BC to her fans – has been a fixture in the local music scene for years. Her BC Combo plays at Liederplatz at 9 p.m.

Mary Ellen’s Celtic Corner: The Killdares, from that hotbed of Celtic music – Dallas, Texas – “blend traditional Celtic playing skills, power pop accessibility and straight up rock 'n’ roll hooks” at Americaplatz at 9:30 p.m.

Musikfest After Hours: The Young Werewolves of Philadelphia play their own brand of indie and surf rock at the TD Bank Community Stage in front of the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks at 11 p.m. Junior’s Grades plays at Club Mural in the from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. Jordan White does some acoustic sets at The Wooden Match (the former Main Street Depot) at 61 W. Lehigh St., from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
