Musikfest Highlights: August 6

The Weather: A 30 percent chance of thundershowers before 10 a.m. It is then expected to become sunny, with a high temperature of 88 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Partly cloudy at night with a forecast low of a cool 58 degrees.

The Headliners:  A pairing of classic rock acts from two different eras. Woodstock veteran Joe Cocker, 68, is best known for his gritty voice, his idiosyncratic arm movements while performing and his covers of Beatles tunes. Huey Lewis & The News was one of the new wave of bands that dominated the pop scene in the 1980s, hitting their peak with “The Power of Love,” the theme song from Back to the Future. Tickets at $47 and $35 are still available. Show starts at 7 p.m. Gates open at 6.

The Highlight: The Dance Expo at Plaza Tropical is a – a full day of programming featuring talented performers from some of the region’s dance troupes and academies, including the Irish Stars Parker School of Dance, The Monarch Dance Company, Born into Dance and the Hispanic-American League of Artists.

For the Little Ones: The theme at the Peeps & Company Craft Tent at Banana Island is Medieval. Butterfly-theme crafts will also be available at the Cancer Support Community Booth at Banana Island, which will also host a Frisbee toss. Those who get their Frisbee to land in the end zone win a prize.

Say Goodbye to the Tibetan Monks: Today will be your last opportunity to see the mandala or sacred sand painting prepared by the monks of the to aid in the environmental healing of the Monocacy Creek waterfront. The Lamas will end their artist residency at Handwerkplatz at a 7 p.m. ceremony during which they will carefully sweep the sand painting away, give grains to those in attendance and pour the rest into the creek -- the symbolism representing the impermanence of life.

The Classical Musikfest: The Vesper Concert Series at and the Chamber Series at the , which both begin tonight, provide an opportunity to break away from the crowds and get a little extra culture with your festing. Satori, a Bethehem ensemble of winds, strings and piano, begins its concert at the church at 5 p.m. The Eliot String Quartet, a family of string players from New York City, begins its concert at the chapel at 7:30 p.m.

The Best of the Free Platzes: If you like reggae music, and mon, who doesn’t, you will want to be at Volksplatz at 7 p.m. for Junior Toots, the son of the legendary Toots Hibbert of Toots & the Maytals. Moonshine Society (Liederplatz, 9 p.m.) might be the only roots and blues band in the world fronted by a pinup model. Black Betty can sing too. Homemade Jamz bills itself as the “youngest blues band in America.” The siblings Ryan Perry, 19, Kyle Perry, 17, and Taya Perry, 13, from Tupelo, Miss., take the Americaplatz stage at 9:30 p.m. Young and multi-talented, Ryan and Kyle also made their instruments themselves from Ford car parts.
