Enter an Allentown Fair 'Blue Ribbon' Contest

The Allentown Fair is holding walk-in registration for its blue ribbon competitions this week.

The Allentown Fair is holding its annual walk-in registration hours for entering exhibits into the fair’s “blue ribbon” competitions.

Should “that radish” be entered as a “summer” or “winter” root vegetable, or should “that funny looking gourd” be considered “warted” or “other?” With 21 departments for entering everything from pies to photographs and hundreds of categories to compete in, these and other burning questions can be ably answered by on-site knowledgeable entry clerks.

The entry office located in Agri-Plex on the west end of the Allentown Fairgrounds will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting Monday, July 30 through the final day on Saturday, August 4. Entrants may also register by mail until the Saturday, August 4 deadline.

The registration form can be found in the fair’s 2012 Premium List booklet that details all of the rules and categories for the various competitions. Prior to entry hours, the booklet is available at the Allentown Fair Office located behind the Ritz Barbecue on the Fairgrounds and online at www.allentownfairpa.org.

Entry clerks will be on hand to help prospective exhibitors complete the forms during the walk-in hours. Clerks may accept registrations only for those items appearing in the Allentown Fair Premium List booklet.

Departments for entry include home products, vegetables, flowers, domestic and fine arts, photography and more. These items are judged before the fair opens and placement ribbons and cash prizes are awarded in each category.

Each day of the fair, unique culinary contests are offered at the Culinary Contest Stage. The 12 corporate-sponsored culinary contests, that are described in the Premium List but have separate applications for entry, offer either substantial prize money or gifts and in some cases, the opportunity to go on to state or national competitions. These applications will also be available at the Agri-Plex entry office during walk-in registration hours.

Fair Superintendent of Entries Louise Dennis is alerting prospective exhibitors that the deadline to register entries is three weeks before the fair runs August 28-September 3. “During walk-in registration hours, friendly entry clerks assist participants with questions about entering their items into the appropriate categories,” she explained.

Persons with questions may call 610-841-4899 during registration hours.
