Moravian Academy Girls' Playoff Run Ends

Lions leading scorer held pointless in semifinal loss to Marian Catholic

ORWIGSBURG – When your team's leading scorer is held scoreless for an entire game, your chances of winning are not very good.

Marian Catholic girls did exactly that to Moravian's Maddie Steen, in earning a 45-35 victory in the District 11 Class A semifinal game Wednesday night at Blue Mountain High School. The Lions' season ended with a 15-7 record.

Steen, a senior and point guard who scored 230 points, and averaged 10.5 points per game this season, was watched and harassed all game by Fillie defenders.

Still, Moravian was able to stay in the game by hitting seven three-point field goals, including four by Rachel Redles, who led all scorers with 16 points. Ashley Blair hit two treys for six total points and Katherine Stone hit one 3-pointer in a seven-point game.

The Lions ability to hit from beyond the arc is what kept them in the game, as they only trailed 23-18 at the half.

“They had girls that were much taller than Maddie,” Moravian Academy coach Chris Pachuta said. “Maddie gets a lot of stuff off cuts and things like that. They are clogging that lane and it was hard for her to get into that middle.”

Marian (20-3) began to wear the Lions down in the third quarter and expanded the lead to 37-26. Gillian Ferko led Marian with 14 points.

“Maddie didn’t score, but she did everything else,” Pachuta said. “She was the one making that big stop and making sure everybody was ready to go.
