Friday Night Roundup: Notre Dame Opens Strong

Bethlehem Catholic's defense scores three touchdowns in non-conference win, while Freedom disappoints the home faithful on opening night.

Notre Dame High School’s football team got its season off to a good start Friday night with a convincing 25-13 win over Palmerton.

Kordell Threadford led the way for the Crusaders with three touchdown passes in front of a home crowd of 1,200 fans, according to The Express Times.

Notre Dame, along with Salisbury, Southern Lehigh and Palisades, all opened the Colonial League season with wins. Next week, Notre Dame travels to Northern Lehigh, which took a 49-0 beating from the Spartans Friday night.

In non-conference play, Bethlehem Catholic defeated Pocono Mountain West 35-7, scoring three touchdowns on interception returns by Ryan Johnson, Chris Figler and Will Ward, according to the Express Times box score.

Michael McDaniel added two rushing touchdowns as the Golden Hawks coasted to an opening night win in Pocono Summit. The Hawks travel to Emmaus for their first Lehigh Valley Conference game next Friday night.

Meanwhile in Bethlehem, the Freedom Patriots disappointed the home faithful with a 17-7 loss to East Stroudsburg South.

An errant Patriots snap in the first quarter gave the Cavaliers a safety and an early 2-0 lead, according to The Express Times box score. Joe Santos gave Freedom a brief lead with a 10-yard touchdown run in the second. But the Cavaliers responded with 15 unanswered points, including touchdown passes of 65 and 71 yards by quarterback Jacob Cirillo.

The Patriots visit Allentown Central Catholic for their first Lehigh Valley Conference game a week from Saturday.
