BeCaHi's State Title Bid Falls Short in Hershey

Golden Hawks lose to South Park 53-38 in PIAA Class AAA girls championship basketball game.

 

Bethlehem Catholic High School’s bid for its first-ever girls state basketball title ended unsuccessfully Saturday night in Hershey.

The Golden Hawks lost the PIAA Class AAA title game 53-38 to the South Park Eagles—another team that had never won a state title.

After an opening few minutes during which the two teams played to a 6-6 tie, the Eagles went on an 8-0 run to end the first quarter. The Golden Hawks would never get that close again.

South Park—a small school district in suburban Pittsburgh—had never sent a boys or girls basketball team this far into the PIAA playoffs. BeCaHi girls played in one state championship game 20 years ago, losing to Pittsburgh North Catholic.

BeCaHi sophomore Kalista Walters was superlative in defeat, leading both teams with 22 points.

Despite the disappointing loss, it was a historic season for the Golden Hawks, as the District 11 champions set a new team record with 28 wins, while losing just three times.
