Becahi Returns to District 11 Playoffs: 5 Things to Know

Golden Hawks host the Lehighton Indians at 7 p.m. Saturday at Frank Banko Field in first round of playoffs.

The Bethlehem Catholic Golden Hawks are returning to the District 11, AAA football playoffs for the first time in seven years when they host Lehighton at Frank Banko Field tonight at 7 p.m.

Here are five things to know about the game:

  • The Lehighton Indians, like the Golden Hawks, are 6-4 on the season, come from a conference (the Mountain Valley) dominated by Quad-A schools and are making a return to the district playoffs after a long hiatus. Lehighton hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2007.
  • Lehighton and Becahi had one common opponent during the 2013 regular season—Pocono Mountain West. Both teams won their meetings with the 3-7 Panthers. The Hawks opened their season in Pocono Summit and scored a 35-7 victory. The Indians visited the Panthers to close out their conference schedule on Oct. 25 and squeaked out a 30-28 win.
  • The Indians want to run the football. Running plays accounted for 77 percent of Lehighton’s offense, according to The Express Times. The team’s top offensive weapon is running back Wyatt Clements, who has rushed for 923 yards and scored 15 touchdowns this year.
  • The winner of this game will play the winner of the meeting between the Pottsville Crimson Tide and the Southern Lehigh Spartans in Center Valley, which is also at 7 p.m. Saturday.
  • If you can’t get to Frank Banko Field, the game will be televised live on RCN cable TV-4. Service Electric will show a taped version of the game at 10 p.m.
