Senior Spotlight: Kelly Shoenberger

"Some would argue the goalkeeper position is the most important on the field, since it is the last line of defense. Saucon has been fortunate to have Kelly, a solid leader and defensive presence, in such an important position." -Coach Stevie Ochse

Playing soccer has been a part of Kelly Shoenberger's life since she was four years old. Through middle school and as a member of the Western Lehigh travel team, which she joined when she was in eighth grade, Kelly always played defense. It wasn't until she entered ninth grade that she not only learned to play the keeper position, but also started as the varsity goalkeeper.

"Kelly has been a four-year starter for us in goal," coach Stevie Ocshe noted. "At first she was wary of playing in net, but eventually made the position her own."

Coach Ochse added that "some of the highlights of Kelly’s career in goal include having the team race to her in celebration after she led us to victory after two rounds of penalty kicks vs. Northwestern Lehigh in the 2009 district quarterfinals."

"She also showed great poise on our road to the state semifinals in 2010 with standout games vs. Southern Lehigh and Trinity. In 2011, she helped our team reach the Colonial League Finals," Ochse said.

Kelly also recalled the Panthers' run to the state semifinals in 2010 and that May 15, 2009 District XI AA playoff game against Northwestern Lehigh, when the Panthers fell behind the favored Tigers 2-0 in the first 20 minutes. In the end, it was Shoenberger--the Panthers' then-freshman goalie--who allowed no other goals as Saucon won that quarterfinal thriller 3-2.

A disappointment was losing to AAA Easton in the first round of the 2011 playoffs. Kelly also admits she would like to replay a few games. The 2012 squad has qualified for post season play and Kelly would like the team to win as many games as possible.  Jim Feimster, Kelly's goalie coach since 9th grade, is the person who has had the greatest influence on her development as a keeper.

Kelly is a member of Saucon Valley's chapter of the National Honor Society and the Future Business Leaders of America. Her favorite subject is art and, while not having a favorite food, she said she does like to eat "healthy foods." Kelly also likes to exercise and concentrates on improving her strength and agility. In her free time she can be found working at a tanning salon, , in Hellertown. She enjoys traveling and going to the beach.

She said she is excited to begin college at the University of Tampa, where she will major in psychology. Although she wants to focus on her education and not play soccer at the Division II school, it is quite possible she will play on a club soccer team.

Kelly has an older brother, , and is the daughter of Mark and Susan Shoenberger.
