'And The Freddy Goes To ... Freedom!'

Freedom High School's "Thoroughly Modern Millie" takes 6 Freddy Awards, including Outstanding Overall Production and Outstanding Lead Actress for Hannah Arnold.

 

led the pack with six awards – including Outstanding Overall Production and Outstanding Lead Actress – at the tenth annual Freddy Awards at Easton’s State Theatre on Thursday night.

“I wasn’t expecting this,” said Hannah Arnold, a little breathlessly, after accepting the Outstanding Lead Actress award for her portrayal of Millie Dillmount, the 1920s “flapper” in Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Freedom’s production also won awards for costumes, lighting, chorus and Outstanding Production Number for "The Speed Test" from the musical.

The tenth annual awards show, which celebrates the local high school musical, featured several special guests, including many alumni of Freddys past; Broadway star and Easton native Dee Roscioli; and Matt Kallis and Chris Lockhart, the producers of , the acclaimed documentary film about the 2008 Freddy Awards.

won three Freddys for its production of Little Women. Samantha Prentice had a piece of two of those, winning individually for Outstanding Solo Vocal Performance, and for being a part of the Outstanding Small Ensemble Performance – an award Notre Dame shared with Emmaus High School.

Notre Dame’s third award went to Tyler Fernandez for Outstanding Performance by a Featured Male Ensemble Member.

’s Nicholas Acampora won his second Freddy for Outstanding Featured Performance by an Actor, accepting his award in the Scarecrow costume he wore in The Wizard of Oz.

, Acampora won a Freddy for Outstanding Performance by a Featured Dancer for his work in Half a Sixpence.

Freedom’s theater company came into the night with 17 nominations – the most of any of the participating 29 eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey schools.

But that doesn’t always translate into awards. Last year, – tied for second most – and was shut out on the big night.

This year, it was a different story.

Filmmakers Kallis and Lockhart added a dramatic touch to their presentation of the night’s ultimate award for Outstanding Overall Production.

“And the Freddy goes to,” they said, as Lockhart opened the envelope. “Did you ever see Braveheart?” Lockhart asked, before he and Kallis raised their fists and, in unison, shouted: “Freedom!”
