PennDOT Closes Sidewalk on New St. Bridge

PennDOT says bridge inspection revealed damage not related to the recent earthquake.

PennDOT announced Saturday that it has closed the sidewalk on the New Street (Philip J. Fahy Memorial) Bridge over the Lehigh River until further notice.

A routine inspection of the bridge was performed Friday and preliminary analysis of the data shows deterioration to portions of the steel supporting the sidewalk. Several concrete slabs are also deteriorating.

Pedestrians are advised to use the Minsi Trail (Stefko Boulevard) or Hill-to-Hill (Route 378) bridges as alternate routes.
