U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent has called for a federal investigation into Bethlehem's misuse of grant money, according to this Express-Times report.

The report says the city has paid back economic development money wrongly used for general operating expenses. A recent audit highlighted the problem and Dent has asked for financial scrutiny by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Express-Times and WFMZ both quoted Bethlehem's Director of Economic Development Joe Kelly as accusing Dent of playing politics. Dent is a Republican. Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan is a Democrat who ran against Dent last year.
