A city construction inspector was killed today in a construction accident on Taylor Street in South Bethlehem, city officials said.

Al Calvo, 58, was on the site inspecting a connection to the city’s storm water sewer system from Lehigh University’s Rauch Business Center on Taylor Street when the accident occurred, according to a news release issued by the mayor’s office.

Joseph Kelly, the city's director of Community and Economic Development, said Calvo apparently fell into a hole on Taylor Street where Lehigh University was performing work that required it to tap into the city's storm sewer system.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Calvo's death, Kelly said.

The Morning Call is reporting that Butz Construction of Allentown was on site doing street work to improve heating and air conditioning systems at Rauch, quoting a Lehigh University spokesman.

Calvo was described as a longtime city employee who spent much of his career working in the city’s Public Works Department as a construction inspector.

“We are shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Al,” said Mayor John Callahan, through a news release. “He was a dedicated employee for the City and he will be missed. My condolences go out to Al’s family and friends.”
