Bridge Rehabilitation Project Delayed

Shimersville Road Repairs Won't Start Until Thursday Because of Rain.

The wet weather today and forecast tomorrow is delaying the start of the Shimersville Road Bridge project until Thursday, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials announced today.

The $1.7 million repair and rehabilitation of the “structurally deficient” bridge had been scheduled to start today. Heavy rain is expected today and into tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service.

The bridge over the Saucon Creek is between Route 412 in Bethlehem and Main Street in Freemansburg. Once construction begins, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction for its duration, which is expected to continue until September 2012.

The closure of Applebutter Road is still scheduled to take place starting on Sept. 16. Applebutter Road is being closed because of its close proximity to the bridge and will remain closed until November, PennDOT officials said.
