Township Kmart Shopping Plaza Evacuated

Explosive device, possibly an old blasting cap, discovered underground at Route 191 mall.

An explosive found embedded in concrete beneath a Bethlehem Township shopping plaza was detonated late this afternoon, according to this Morning Call report.

The discovery, by construction crews working on an addition to the Kmart shopping plaza on Route 191, prompted the evacuation of the mall and a call to explosives experts from Bethlehem and Allentown.

Emergency crews were still at the scene this afternoon, hours after the device was found. The experts confirmed it was an explosive and went ahead with detonation.

The explosion was not very large and no one was injured.
