SouthSide Man Punched Daughter, Police Say

Argument over playing grandson led to house melee, during which grandfather is accused of throwing paint can and punching his daughter.

A SouthSide man who yelled at his grandson to stop playing on the kitchen table got into an argument with the boy’s mother – the man's daughter – then threw a paint can at her, forced her to the floor and punched her in the face, court records say.

The daughter told police that her 6-year-old son was playing with a pan on the kitchen table around 5pm Thursday when her father, Charles D. Sherry, 49, came upstairs from the basement “and was drunk as usual,” the records say. They were at Sherry’s house at 947 Wyandotte St.

Sherry grabbed the pan and threw it while yelling at the boy to stop playing on the table, the daughter told police. She and Sherry got into an argument. He threw the paint can, hitting her in the left leg. He grabbed her by both arms, forced her on the floor, punched her in the face and started pulling her hair, the daughter said.

The daughter said her mother came inside and separated her and her father.

The daughter had cuts on her left leg and right arm, multiple scratches on her neck and a bruise forming on her left eye, the records say.

Sherry, meanwhile, told police he had a couple of beers but wasn’t drunk. He said his daughter started the argument and that she attacked him. He said he only defended himself. He had small scratches on his neck.

Sherry was charged with simple assault and harassment. He was arraigned later Thursday by on-duty District Judge Jackie Taschner of Palmer Township and committed to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $1,000 bail.
