Sinkhole Evacuee Allowed to Return Home

A Bethlehem Township woman who was forced to evacuate her house because of a large sinkhole that opened nearby was allowed to return to her home on Monday, The Express Times reported.

The sinkhole to the rear of 1502 Second St. was caused by a sewer main leak, has been stabilized and no longer poses a threat to the surrounding neighborhood, Township Fire Marshal Steve Gallagher told the newspaper.

Contractors are expected to arrive at the scene Wednesday and fill the hole with grout, the newspaper reported.

On Sunday morning, the sinkhole was about 25 to 30 feet wide and 10 to 12 feet deep, Bethlehem Township police said.

Two smaller sinkholes had been discovered a week earlier in the 1400 block of Second Street, police said. There had been a sewer main break in that area as well.
