Police: Man Tried to Set Ex-Girlfriend on Fire

City man accused of putting a lighter to sheets while ex-girlfriend was in bed.

A city man tried to set his ex-girlfriend's sheets on fire while she was in bed and their young daughter was nearby, ο»Ώ said.

According to police, Joshua Zayas, 25, of 309 Franklin St. got in an argument with his girlfriend Wednesday morning at her home on Lynfield Drive.

During the argument, police say, Zayas tried to flip the woman's mattress over and pull her sheets off. When she covered herself with the sheets, he threatened to burn them, then got out a lighter and burned a hole in the fabric.

The couple's 3-year-old daughter was nearby through the incident, police said.

Zayas was charged with arson, simple assault, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned before District Judge Richard Yetter and sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $7,500 bail.
