60-year-old man was trying to fill his car with gas on highway shoulder when he was struck.

A Sussex County, N.J., man was hit by a vehicle and killed as he stood next to his stopped car on eastbound Route 22 in Bethlehem Township early Saturday in what state police called a hit-and-run crash.

Troopers are asking for the public’s help in finding the hit-and-run driver responsible for the death of 60-year-old Paul J. Agens of Hamburg, N.J., who fled the scene. The incident occurred at 2 a.m. not far from the highway’s Route 33 interchange, according to a state police public information report.

Agens had his car pulled onto the shoulder on the eastbound lanes of the highway and was trying to fill its tank with gasoline when he was hit, troopers said. Agens died at the scene.
