Man Killed in Apparent Accident at Gun Club

Scanner reports indicated the gun went off when he tried to take it out of his car

A man apparently accidentally shot himself to death while taking a gun out of his car at a North Whitehall Township gun club, according to police radio and published reports.

This evening, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim identified the deceased as Arthur Lichtenwalner, 61, of Lehigh Township, Northampton County. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the body, Grim said.

The manner -- whether it was accidental or not -- is pending further investigation, Grim said. 

The shooting happened at the Ranger Lake Rod & Gun Club along Quarry Road near Ironton at about 10:40 a.m., according to the radio reports. The victim was wounded in the abdomen and apparently died at the scene.

Northern Valley Ambulance and Schnecksville Fire Company were called to the scene. State Police at Bethlehem are investigating the death, but have not released any details.
