Flooding Closes Applebutter Road

But main thoroughfare through South Bethlehem reopened for evening rush

A busy two-lane road in Bethlehem and Lower Saucon Township was closed for some time this afternoon because of minor flooding.

Applebutter Road, which is a state road,Β was closed between Shimersville Road in the City of Bethlehem and Ringhoffer Road in Lower Saucon Township. Located along this section of the road are the IESI Bethlehem Landfill and Calpine, a local energy plant.

Applebutter Road is an important conduit for traffic between Freemansburg and Bethlehem and the eastern part of Lower Saucon Township.

As of 3pm, the entrance to the road from Shimersville Road was barricaded and a service vehicle was parked there to prevent traffic from attempting to maneuver around the barricades.

PennDOT continues to provide updates on flooding-related road closures throughout the area. Other roads closed in Northampton County as of this afternoon include portions of Lehigh Drive and Route 611 in the City of Easton.Β

The flooding is a result of heavy rain dumped on the region by a major storm Wednesday and Thursday.
