Driver Charged in Deaths of NY Couple, Baby

The man who surrendered in Bethlehem after leaving the scene of a fatal accident that killed a couple and their unborn baby last weekend in Brooklyn has been formally charged, the NYPD said in a statement.

According to the statement from the police, Julio Acevedo was apprehended Wednesday during an arranged surrender in the parking lot of a minimart on Hellertown Road in Bethlehem. Acevedo waived his right to an extradition hearing and was brought back to New York on Thursday by the NYPD.

Acevedo has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, causing death of child passenger, leaving the scene of an accident, and criminal negligent homicide in the deaths of an Orthodox couple and their baby, who was born prematurely before dying earlier this week.

Acevedo, 44, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was processed Thursday night in New York at the 78th Precinct in Park Slope and then brought to Brooklyn Supreme Court.

The reasoning behind processing him in Park Slope, a police source told Patch, was because the NYPD wanted to process him in a neighborhood where his alleged crime did not occur.

“There’s a lot of emotion in Williamsburg right now,” the source said.

According to News 12 Brooklyn, Acevedo was arraigned in Brooklyn Supreme Court late Thursday night after he was processed in the 78th Precinct.

According to the police, the full charges against Acevedo are as follows:

• 1 count of Vehicular Manslaughter 1: Cause Death of Child Passenger
• 3 counts of Leaving the Scene of an Accident
• 3 counts of Criminally Negligent Homicide

According to police reports, officers responded to a 911 call at around 12:10 a.m. on March 3 about a car accident on Kent Avenue and Wilson Street, within the confines of the 90th Precinct.

Upon arrival to the scene, police officers found a two-car accident with a married Orthodox Jewish couple, who was pregnant, injured on the scene. 

After further investigation, police found that a black 2008 Toyota Camry (livery cab) carrying the couple was traveling westbound on Wilson Street at Kent Avenue when a grey 2010 BMW, allegedly driven by Acevedo, traveling northbound on Kent struck the cab on the driver’s side. Upon impact, the male driver and an another occupant of the BMW fled the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle behind.

EMS also responded to the location and transported the cab driver to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

However, the rear-seat occupants, a 21-year-old man and wife were brought to Beth Israel Hospital and Bellevue Hospital, respectively.

Nathan Glauber and his wife Raizi, who was pregnant, were both pronounced dead at the hospital.

Subsequently, Raizi had delivered a premature infant boy upon treatment at Bellevue Hospital, but he died the next day.
