Alleged Shoplifter from Bethlehem Had Handgun

South Side man is charged with retail theft at Kohl's in Lower Nazareth Township.

A Bethlehem man is in Northampton County Prison after he admitted to having a handgun -- he did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon -- when he was detained by loss prevention staff at Kohl's Department Store for shoplifting, according to Colonial Regional Police.

On Jan. 9, police say, Jabiel Tirado, 23, of the 800 block of Ontario Street allegedly tried to steal $52 worth of jewelry from the Kohl's in Lower Nazareth Township.

When loss prevention staff brought Tirado to a back office, according to police, he admitted to having a handgun. The gun was then secured by Kohl's staff.

Tirado was arriagned before District Judge Joseph Barner and charged with retail theft and possession of a firearm without a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

He was sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Editor's Note: The original version of this story said Tirado had an "unlicensed firearm," when, more specifically, he did not have a concealed weapons permit.
