The director of campus safety and chief of police at on Tuesday issued a crime alert and a note of caution to students after receiving word that three dormitory rooms had been burglarized in the past week.

“I wish to remind all students to lock your deadbolt and door locks on your dorm room,” George Boksan wrote in an e-mail to the campus community. “Be sure to close and lock your bedroom windows when the room is unoccupied. Use precaution and lock your dorm room while showering and the room is unoccupied.

“Report any suspicious activity and/or crimes in the dorms immediately to Campus Safety & Police. Record all serial numbers from your electronic devices and store hard copies of the information in a secure location. Do not leave/store jewelry in plain sight.”

The common-sense advice comes as a result of three dorm burglaries on campus since November 2, all of them coming while the rooms were unoccupied, Boksan said.

The first, on November 2, was on the first floor of the JoSmith Residence Hall. The next two both happened on the second floor of Wilhelm. The first happened sometime over the weekend. The second happened Tuesday night between 6 p.m. and midnight, Boksan said.
