1 Hurt in Chemical Explosion, Fire at LVIP IV

Ethanol fire reported at fragrance mixing plant, Ungerer & Co., at about 10 a.m.

At least one person has been hurt in a chemical explosion and fire at a fragrance mixing plant in Lehigh Valley Industrial Park IV in Hanover Township, Northampton County, according to multiple media reports.

The fire at Ungerer & Company, 110 Commerce Way, was reported at a little before 10 a.m. One person was taken to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill, The Express Times reported.

One person was exposed to ethanol, which was stored inside of a 55-gallon chemical barrel inside the plant, according to The Morning Call. The chemical, which is used in the production of alcoholic beverages and other chemicals, is flammable and can be toxic depending on the type and extent of exposure, the newspaper reported.

There is no immediate danger to the public, Bob Mateff, coordinator of the Northampton County Emergency Management Agency, told WFMZ-TV.
