Suspects Sought in Shootings, Resident Thwarts Burglary Attempt Top Local News

Bethlehem detectives say a man known as "Slime" gunned down Tyree Wimberly on Club Avenue in January. On Wednesday, Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin announced that an arrest warrant has been obtained for Ulysses Rodriguez, a 20-year-old whose last known address was 937 Walnut St., Allentown.

WANTED: Suspects in Marvine-Pembroke Shooting

Bethlehem police say they have obtained arrest warrants for two suspects in the Monday evening shooting of a man in the city’s Marvine-Pembroke neighborhood. Police have not released the name of the victim, who was in critical condition at St. Luke's University Hospital in Fountain Hill. However, they have asked the public's help in finding their two prime suspects: Angelo Lopez and David Hernandez.

An attempted burglary at a Lower Saucon Township home early Sunday morning was thwarted by people inside who held a door and a window shut as would-be intruders tried to kick the door down, police said. A Bethlehem man, Paul Ryan Ortiz, 23, was one of three men arrested in the burglary attempt.

Northampton County Drug Task Force agents found 43 individually wrapped bags of marijuana—along with a number of individually wrapped bags of cocaine and hashish—during a warrant search of a Freemansburg home on Thursday, according to court papers. The home’s owner, 58-year-old Denise D. Brown of 959 Ramblewood Lane, is facing multiple drug charges as a result.

Robert Kopecek, who led Northampton Community College for 26 years while it significantly expanded course offerings and more than tripled the size of its student enrollment, died at his home in North Carolina on Thursday, the school announced.

Lehigh Valley Academy Ranked 2nd Best in State

The Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School ranks second best among all the high schools in Pennsylvania, according to annual rankings published Tuesday by U.S. News and World Report. The Hanover Township, Northampton County, school also ranked 157th among all high schools nationwide.

A lineup of Christian rock acts has been lined up to headline at Musikfest’s main stage on Sunday, Aug. 4, ArtsQuest announced. Skillet gets top billing in this lineup of four bands, which also includes We As Human, Decyfer Down and Thousand Foot Krutch.
