Flood Watch Issued for Friday

At least two inches and up to five inches of rain are expected to fall, weather service says.

With more than an inch of rain in Friday’s forecast, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Bethlehem beginning Friday and running until Saturday afternoon.

According to the weather service forecast, there is a strong likelihood of rain and thunderstorms during the day on Friday, with two to three inches or more of rain falling over a wide area of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

There is also a possibility that the rainfall totals will be as high as five inches or as little as less than two inches.

In any case, the weather service notes that the ground in this area is already heavily saturated from record-setting rainfall in August and heavy rains in early September, decreasing the ground’s ability to absorb what rain falls and increasing the likelihood of flooding.

The Monocacy Creek in Bethlehem has already flooded three times in a little more than the last month and another significant rainfall could produce the same result, which this weekend, could have an impact on the Celtic Classic, which opens on Friday afternoon.
