5 Things to Know Today

Moravian College screens documentary, hosts discussion on gas drilling.

Good morning Bethlehem. Today is Thursday November 10, 2011. We are 44 days away from Christmas in the Christmas City.

  1. Today is report card day at and high schools as well as the four middle schools.
  2. For those of you aiming to dispose of tree limbs and other yard waste today, the city’s Compost Center is closed, however the at the Theis/Cornfeld Recycling Center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  3. is hosting a screening of the documentary Gasland – a film about the natural gas drilling industry and the process known as “fracking” – at 4 p.m. in the Haupert Union Building’s UBC Room. The free showing, sponsored by the college’s Reeves Library, will be followed by a question & answer session with Cathy Frankenberg, the founder of Pennsylvania Gas Truth and the mid-Atlantic policy associate for the Appalachian Mountain Club.
  4. Sing for America presents Irving Berlin’s at the at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from this group’s performances are donated to members of the military and their families and groups such as the Blue Star Mothers. Tickets for the performance are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and $5 for children under age 6.
  5. The great Dar Williams takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Discovered by Joan Baez (who recorded some of her songs) not long after she began her career 20 years ago, Williams is one of the biggest names in folk music and one of the editor’s faves. Tickets are $25. The doors open at 6 p.m.
