5 Things to Know Today

Good morning Bethlehem. Today is Wednesday, November 2, 2011 -- or, Day Five of Oksnowberfest, as one of our Twitter followers is calling it. At City Council last night, Mayor John Callahan said more than 2,500 city households were still without electricity – and his was one of them.

1. For the second straight day, PPL is trying to make amends with suffering customers by providing free morning coffee at participating Subway restaurants. The participating Subways in Bethlehem are at , ., and You do not need to prove you are a PPL customer, suffering or otherwise, to get your free cup o’ joe from 7 to 9 a.m.
2. If you live in and your power has not been restored, the Bethlehem Township Community Center, 2900 Farmersville Road, will welcome you to shower during its normal business hours – beginning at 5:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. tonight. Just bring your own towels, soap and proof of residency.
3. Classes at have been cancelled for the third consecutive day today. An update on the university website posted Tuesday night said the university hopes to welcome students back to campus, beginning at 4 p.m. today and resume classes on Thursday. But those plans will not be finalized until PPL can test its ability to provide full power to the campus again and the results will not be known until some time this morning.
4. Both the city and Bethlehem Township have made provisions for you to deliver all of your excess yard waste and tree limbs that fell because of the storm. Though the city compost center is closed today and Thursday, the city has set upin the parking lot of the Theis/Cornfeld Recycling Center, 635 Illick's Mill Road. which will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Thursday. The Bethlehem Township Recycling Center on Falmer Drive will be open for extended hours – from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
5. hosts the final in a series of from 5 to 11 p.m. – an authentic dining experience featuring beef goulash, chicken paprikash, stuffed peppers, dobosh torte, strudel, kiffles and other delicacies. Tonight also features a celebrity bar night from 7 to 9 p.m. We don’t know who the celebrities are, but we do know that a portion of the proceeds from the dinner and the bar night go to the South Bethlehem Historical Society.
