5 Things to Know Today

Come to the SouthSide for Hungarian food and/or a yarn swap at SteelStacks.

Good morning Bethlehem. Today is Wednesday, October 5, 2011. We are 79 days away from Christmas in the Christmas City.

  1. The National Weather Service is forecasting sunny skies, a high of 71 degrees and a breeze of 7-14 mph, essentially a lovely fall day. But we emphasize the word fall because that’s what the temperatures will do after the sun sets – all the way down to a chilly 39. If you go out tonight, bring a jacket.
  2. Highway inspections continue along Route 22 today, this time in the westbound lanes between Route 512 and Airport Road. Expect lane closures and delays starting at 9 a.m. and use caution if you see traffic slow to a crawl or halt.
  3. Considering a change in careers? (Maybe even just to get a job.) Go to “Breaking the Career Mold,” an interactive presentation at CareerLink of the Lehigh Valley, 1601 Union Boulevard, Allentown, at 10 a.m. The presentation will offer “a different spin on a variety of career choices and job opportunities.” Also at 10 a.m., CareerLink is hosting a session on “Funding Education,” in which you can get information and help in applying for student grants and loans, scholarships and free tuition offers.
  4. It’s at , 17 W. Second St. Get your fill of Hungarian delicacies like beef goulash, chicken paprikash, stuffed peppers, dobosh tortes, strudel and kiffles. The event will be repeated every Wednesday through the month of October from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the South Bethlehem Historical Society.
  5. It will be “Knitter’s Night Out,” at the for Stacks in the City, the weekly Wednesday ladies night at SteelStacks. Bring your knitting and crocheting project and, if you like, at least 700 yards of yarn for a yarn swap. The night will also include giveaways, drink specials and the folks from and Conversational Threads Fiber Arts Studio. The rules for the yarn swap are here. The fun starts at 6 p.m. in the Creativity Commons on the first floor of the ArtsQuest Center.
