5 Things to Know Today

Town Hall Lecture Series starts tonight with a talk about al-Qaeda and terrorism.

Good morning Bethlehem. Today is Wednesday, November 9, 2011. Election Day is behind us. It is now safe to watch television commercials again. For a couple of months anyway. Bear in mind that there will be a national test of the emergency broadcast system on your TV and radio stations at 2 p.m. Don’t be alarmed. The aliens haven’t landed. Yet.

  1. Damage from the continues to be a source of dislodged tree limbs and other types of plant-generated debris. The city has once again closed its Compost Center, but the at the Theis/Cornfeld Recycling Center does remain open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through the end of this week.
  2. Watch out for road repairs, inspections or other work that could cause lane restrictions and delays along the westbound lanes of Route 22 between Route 191 and Route 512; along Route 33 between Interstate 78 and Freemansburg Avenue; and along Linden Street between Macada Road and Oakland Road.
  3. Stacks in the City, the weekly Wednesday ladies night hosted by the tonight is all about the mixed drink. The Wine Institute of Mixology will be presenting samples and lessons on how to prepare your own libations. It all starts at 6 p.m. and it is free.
  4. The Bethlehem Town Hall Lecture Series kicks off at 7 p.m. with "The Great Red Herring: How Al-Qaeda Blinds Us to Terrorism." Sociology Prof. Ziad Munson will explain how our obsession with al-Qaeda over the last 10 years has blinded us to the most likely -- and most preventable -- terrorism of the future. There will be time for questions and discussion after the lecture, which is free.
  5. The Pennsylvania Sinfonia presents , a concert at the , 2540 Center St., starting at 7:30 p.m. The concert features Mozart’s Sonata in F Major for Violin and Piano, Martinu’s Sonata No. 2 for Cello and Piano and Beethoven’s Trio III in C Minor, No. 3. Tickets are $15 at the door.
